The Leftovers: Dave’s Picks

4

Not every game we love makes it into the WingDamage top 10. Some of them just don’t have enough unanimous support. These are what we like to call “The Leftovers.”

2010 was an amazing year filled with some pretty nifty games. Narrowing all this niftiness down to a mere 10 games proved to be a daunting task. With the help of an intrepid band of explorers, scientists, and the Sandwichtabulatron, I was able to determine the 10 best games of the year. Unfortunately, my picks were not unanimously approved with a standing ovation and on offer of dictatorship of Wingdamagia for life.

Review: nail’d (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)

0

Nail’d is an offroad arcade style racer that has taken the laws of physics and blasted them out the window. Like a mid 90′s Mountain Dew commercial, nail’d is extreme to the max.

Think of it as an off-off road game. Races take place in the sky almost as often as on the ground. You’ll be leaping over speeding trains and flying over hot air balloons as you tear through the courses.

But does all this extreme-nessity make for a fun game?

FOG Review: Gundam Battle Assault 2 (PS1)

1

Friday Old Games” is a series of articles in which we review a game from the older generations of consoles, share why we picked it, and whether or not it holds up with time.

Gundam Battle Assault 2 is a one-on-one 2-D fighting game where giant mechs punch and shoot each other in the face. The game lets you experience several Gundam universes. The story loosely follows the events of the One Year War, the 13th Gundam Fight, and the Endless Waltz OVA.

Which I take to mean, “giant mechs punching and shooting each other in the face”.

Review: Puzzle Bots (PC)

Dr. Hugo’s Factory for Making Robots might be the strangest factory on Earth. First off, the entire factory seems to employ only five people, and each of them seems to be responsible for making a single adorable robot. Dr. Hugo is hoping to get all the robots ready for the upcoming Christmas holiday, and is pushing his tiny crew to finish up with their tiny robots.

You will run each robot through a series of tests to familiarize yourself with their abilities, but the real adventure begins when the Hero convinces the other robots to go exploring. You’ll unlock a plot of sinister proportions as you explore the factory.

Review: Medal of Honor (PS3, Xbox 360, PC)

0

The past few years have not been kind to the storied Medal of Honor franchise. As rival franchise Call of Duty soared to greater and greater heights, the Medal of Honor series struggled to keep up. It’s setting had even become a joke as every year we gamers were treated to a glut of World War II shooters.

It was obvious that a change was needed to spark the franchise back to the top. New studio Danger Close was brought in to handle the single player campaign and legendary Battlefield creators DICE took care of the game’s multi-player mode. This was the first game in the series that was going to have an M rating. The setting has also been changed from World War II to modern day Afghanistan.

Everything was in place for Medal of Honor to challenge Halo and Call of Duty for shooter supremacy.

My Addiction to Word Challenge

1

They say the first step towards recovery is admitting you have a problem. Well I am an addict. I am addicted to the Facebook game Word Challenge. Even as I write these words I am rearranging the letters in my head as fast as possible to form other words.

Word Challenge is as simple as can be. There are literally dozens of games that you can find all over the internet or your fancy pants phone that are variations on the same anagram theme.

Hands-On Impressions: Frobot (WiiWare) PAX 2010

Walking around the multitudinous booths and the general insanity of PAX, I spied a bizarre little game starring an afro puffed robot.  As a fan of robots and Dr. J style afros, I knew I had to check it out. On a side note, I think my spell check is racist. It refuses to recognize afro as a word. But if we can somehow find a way to get past culturally insensitive spell checking software, there is a game to talk about.

Hands-On Impressions: NBA Jam (Wii) PAX 2010

Longtime WingDamagarians know that I am a huge fan of the NBA Jam series. So when I heard that the upcoming NBA Jam game was going to be playable at PAX, I made my way over to the EA booth. Even before I could see the booth, I could hear people yelling in a mixture of excitement, anger, and joy, as they dunked on each other and caught on fire. It sounded like a Friday night at the arcade back in the day.

After chatting with some of the members of the dev team and getting some sweet hands-on time with the game, I can safely say that NBA Jam is back and better than ever.

PAX 2010 Penny Arcade Expo

Although I’ve been a fan of teh Penny Arcadez for years, I’ve never made it to their annual gaming convention. As if that wasn’t enough, this was to be my first convention as a member of the gaming press. I had a Media Badge and everything. I had all sorts of interviews set up with PR reps and developers. What if they didn’t like me? Or worse, what if they didn’t like my suit?

Sandwichtabulatron

5

As I laid in bed last night thinking of Philly Cheese-steaks and video games, I postulated that there might be a way to bring the 2 together. I sketched out an idea for a quantum computer that would be able to crunch the massive amount of data.

With the aid of a hammer, some duct tape and tin foil, I was able to construct a machine capable of processing the complex equations needed to determine exactly what sandwich correlates best to which game.

Confused?
