Dark Void Zero Review (DSiWare)

I know what you’re thinking. “Where’s the Friday Old Games review for this week?” Well, gentle reader, I’ll tell you. In an attempt to promote the new jetpack-infused third-person-shooter, Dark Void, Capcom forged an imaginary story of an abandoned NES game named Dark Rift. The game has now been “revived” and released as Dark Void Zero. While it’s not really an “old game”, let’s just pretend the story is true.

Friday Old Games” is a series of articles in which we review a game from the older generations of consoles, share why we picked it, and whether or not it holds up with time.

In our horribly named, but entirely delightful, weekly series, we jump into the official WingDamage Delorean and go back… back in time to examine some of the games of yesteryear. So let’s see if we can get this baby up to 88 miles per hour and go back to 1985 and look at Duck Hunt for the NES.

The Nintendo Entertainment System came packed with the raddest looking light gun in the history of video games. In the 80′s, the NES zapper looked like the future. When you were done pretending to shoot your friends with it, you could use it to play what I still consider to be one of the best light gun game ever made.

In the golden age of the NES, Capcom made a number of games based on Disney cartoons. While games like Ducktales where a staple of my childhood, a few of them passed me by until more recent times. One of these was Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

I checked with the WingDamage gods and they agree that you cannot have an unofficial Mario day without discussing the original Super Mario Bros. It simply cannot happen.

Super Mario Bros. 3 Review (NES)

"The Wizard never saw it coming."

Friday Old Games” is a series of articles in which we review a game from the older generations of consoles, share why we picked it, and whether or not it holds up with time.

Today is a special themed edition of “Friday Old Games”. With our recent review of New Super Mario Bros. Wii now live, I’m taking this opportunity to talk about my favorite game in the franchise, Super Mario Bros. 3.

While the original Super Mario Bros. laid down an excellent starting point for the series, the sequel (known to us non-Japanese gamers as The Lost Levels) felt like more of an expansion than a new game. In October of 1988, Nintendo of America released their own Super Mario Bros. 2 (later to be titled Super Mario USA in Japan) at the same time that Japanese gamers were getting their hands on the revolutionary Super Mario Bros. 3.

In honor of the release of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, I thought I would take a look back at my favorite of the 8-bit Mario games, Super Mario Bros. 2.

Back in the late 80′s, Disney had a brilliant idea: To bring well produced cartoons to the after school time slot that was normally filled with soap operas and reruns of The Flintstones. It was a great tactic that produced some very popular series. At some point along the way, Disney made a deal with Capcom to make games based on a few of their shows. DuckTales, a flagship series for “Disney Afternoon”, was one of the first games produced and one of the most popular.

What we didn’t know at the time was that we were getting a game produced by several key members of the Mega Man team, including Keiji Inafune, Yoshihiro Sakaguchi, and Tokuro Fujiwara. This lead not only to the creation of a very tight platformer, but also to some amazing original tunes, most notably the Moon’s theme.

Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa is a 2D platformer where you control a baby named Upa who has been given a magic rattle. Upa must go through seven cheerfully themed worlds to get to a goat demon and rescue a treasure chest full of other babies. Yes, you read that correctly.

The first thing that sets Paperboy apart from other games of it’s day is the story. Paperboy isn’t out to save a princess and he isn’t trying to save the world. He is just a guy trying to do his job.

Paperboy’s only goal is to deliver to his fellow townsfolk their newspaper. Sure he might knock over a few headstones, or break a window or two, but he is just a kid trying to earn a little money. I like to imagine that Paperboy is saving up to take his dream girl out for a night on the town.

Piles of Shame

Almost every gamer I know has one. Especially those who are collectors.

That stack of “must play” titles that you never actually got around to playing. You may have started most of them, but never played more than half. It isn’t that you don’t like the game. In fact, you were enjoying it quite a bit. There are just too many games to play in a day and you have a real job/family/school work/etc.
