Import Impressions: Minna no Rhythm Tengoku (Wii)

2

“This is twice as fun as how completely unsafe it looks.”

Minna no Rhythm Tengoku (meaning Everyone’s Rhythm Heaven) is the most recent entry and first console edition of Nintendo’s Rhythm Heaven series. Like its predecessors, the game is composed of a number of music-driven rhythm games with simple controls. I became an immediate fan after trying out the DS game released in 2009, and was downright ecstatic when Nintendo announced a follow up for the Wii.

I was also concerned, however, since being Wii software likely entitled it to have motion gestures, and big oafs like myself can be pretty uncoordinated. Could this game have been spoiled before it even came out? (Quick spoiler: no.)

Barrel Roll #127 – “The Interview”

2

Oooooooh yeeaaaaaaah!

Our one-hundred and twenty-seventh episode of the podcast sees the return of Adam #2. Milecki survived San Diego ComiCon and is back to give us the low-down on the insanity.

Starting with the new releases of the week, the guys realize the gaming industry accidentally released nothing but licensed games. Then in the news, they discuss the new 3DS price-drop and the Humble Indie Bundle #3.

The second half of the show has the guys discussing the games they’ve been playing, which includes more Bastion talk from Jesse as well as the full game of Catherine. Jonah is on a random old PC game kick with the excellent King’s Bounty: The Legend. Adam has played through the entirety of Rhythm Heaven Wii (aka Minna no Rhythm Tengoku) and seems to have enjoyed it quite a bit. Milecki has been playing a ton of stuff since his last time on the show, but focuses on the SpaceChem DLC and Dungeons of Dredmor. The preview build of Wyv & Keep is also discussed.

And before the guys wrap things up, they announce the latest giveaway for a copy of the Humble Frozenbyte Bundle.

Barrel Roll! #126 – “A Sad Farewell”

1

On a very sad episode of the sadcast, Jesse gives his thoughts on the Mega Man Legends 3 cancellation. After the unpleasantness is out of the way, the guys move on to happier topics.

In our “Games We Played” segment, Jonah can’t quite figure out why he is playing Tiny Tower on his iPhone, but is enchanted by Rhythm Heaven. Jesse gives us the low-down on the latest 3D classic from the 3DS Virtual Console, Xevious 3D. Did we mention it has an extra dimension?

Finally, the two of them discuss their initial impressions of the gorgeous new Summer of Arcade title Bastion.

Other topics include the games coming out this week and the news. All this plus random tangents on Barrel Roll! #126, “A Sad Farewell”.

E3 2011: Rhythm Heaven Hands-On (Wii)

Rhythm Heaven for the Nintendo DS is truly one of my all-time favorite DS games; one of my all-time favorite games on any system even. So when I first heard it was coming to Wii, I was ecstatic. But that quickly led to trepidation. Would Rhythm Heaven still work as well with motion-based gestures? Sure, the DS game made use of a flicking action, but that was still something physical. Trying to swing your hand or arm to a beat can be less precise. What I found, however, was a great surprise.

Barrel Roll! #118 – “You’re the Inspiration”

2

On a very emotional episode of the Barrel Roll Podshow, the guys discover that the band Chicago is too powerful to include in a rhythm game without reducing the player to a blubbering mess of tears and regret.

After two and a half years of Jesse praising Valkyria Chronicles, Jonah has finally given the game a chance. As it turns out, it is fantastic. He also finally gave the DSiWare service some love and bought WayForward’s Mighty Milky Way. Adam has gone back to one of his favorite DS games, Rhythm Heaven and also put in more time with Minecraft. Adam 2 has been obsessively playing Knights in the Nightmare, a game that even after multiple explanations, Jonah still doesn’t quite understand, as well as Neuroshima Hex, another game that Jonah is both fascinated and confused by.

As usual, the guys also talk about the new releases of the week, and gaming news. There is also a song by one “Main Finger” McCoolahan, “Scorched Ice (Napalm Man vs. Chill Man)”. For all these reasons and more, you should already be downloading episode #118, “You’re the Inspiration”.
